The decisions we make in our Diocese on this issue have serious consequences. Recent decisions in British Columbia, Toronto, Britain and the United States, which contravene the traditional Anglican teaching on sexuality, have been divisive. They now threaten to permanently divide and alienate local parishes, dioceses and even the global Anglican Communion.
For clergy and lay Anglicans in those regions, the harmful impact of such uncertainty and conflict is deep and far-reaching. The painful experiences of other parts of our Church around the world underscore the gravity and importance of this issue to the future of our own Diocese here in Ottawa.
While we Anglicans have traditionally had difficulty in faithfully and openly addressing sexual matters in the Church, the current situation makes it imperative that we try.
